For the renovation of The Hong Kong Club Library, our vision was to convey the soul of a traditional library while infusing it with modern flexibility, technology, and polyvalence. The new design pays homage to the Club’s heritage and history, seamlessly blending classic elements, such as herringbone wooden floors and coffered ceilings, with sleek, high-gloss lacquers. A striking feature ceiling reveals the building’s raw structural concrete waffle slabs, creating a dynamic dialogue between past and present.
Our primary design intent was to visually and symbolically reconnect the Library with the city. The layout is conceived around a central nave that guides the eye from the entrance to the full-height windows, flooding the space with natural light. This axis is flanked by private alcoves and curated seating arrangements, inviting Members to retreat and immerse themselves in the library’s collection of books and periodicals.
This architectural approach draws inspiration from sacral design, reflecting our belief in the sacred essence of knowledge. While Hong Kong is often perceived primarily as a business hub, it is also a city of profound learning and culture, home to world-class universities. The library’s design is a testament to that intellectual spirit.
To ensure an atmosphere of tranquil comfort, we integrated advanced acoustic design throughout. The result is a versatile space that serves as a peaceful daytime retreat for members and transforms into an elegant venue for elegant dinners and evening events.
Thoughtfully reimagined, the library is designed to both satisfy longstanding patrons and attract a new generation of enthusiasts.
